Frequently Asked Questions
Q: When is the best time to come?

A: The best time to visit is when you can. That said, different species and methods vary through the season. However, since there are 2 distinct runs each of king, silver and red salmon, the Kenai is productive all summer long. In general, we fish for king salmon from May to July and silver salmon from August to September. Red salmon are available June, July and August. Trout are available all season from mid-June and get better all the way into October. Halibut are available from May to August. We mostly troll for king salmon, and use light tackle spinning gear or flies for silvers. Sometimes we'll use bait for silvers as well. Reds are caught with fly tackle and you don't have to be a pro to become proficient at catching them.

Q: What's the weather like?

A: If you are after unlimited sun, June and July are the months for you. Weather is generally mild through August but September can be cool. We can see sun, rain and a temperature change of 30 degrees in one day. Even sunny days can be cool, especially in the mornings. We fish rain or shine and provide basic rain gear.

Q: What clothes should I bring?

A: You should pack warm layered clothes that can be added/removed as the temperature varies. Also bring personal rain gear if you are a special size, waterproof boots or shoes and warm wool blend socks. We highly recommend bringing comfortable moisture wicking long johns. Our favorite brand is Patagonia's Capeline line of long underwear.

Q: Do you provide fishing gear?

A: Yes, we provide professional quality G-Loomis rods and high quality reels on guided trips. All bait, lures and flies are also provided during charters. If you are staying with us on a package trip with guided fishing and lodging, we provide G-Loomis fly rods and flies for bank fishing. Equipment stays here at the camp.

Q: What gear should I bring?

A: If you will be utilizing our river bank, personal waders are highly recommended, since we do not provide them. Please thoroughly wash all mud from waders prior to your arrival to avoid importing any foreign matter into our river. Since we are located on the banks of the world famous Kenai River, salmon and trout may be present at any time during the summer. We provide all tackle, but encourage anyone wishing to bank fish to bring their own quality fishing gear, if they prefer it or if they plan on doing unguided fishing off our property. Your best bets are med--med/heavy rods and reels with 14-20lb test for salmon other than Kings, and 5-9 weight fly rods for fishing trout and salmon respectively.
